Titus Andronicus open for Abraham Lincoln

This just in– the last and best pool party of all time has been announced. I know, I know– Black Lips + Deerhunter + King Khan was awesome and what could be better than that?

I’ll tell you what!

YO LA TENGO + TITUS ANDRONICUS

That’s right. I know. Really. Sweet.

I’m obliged to tell you that yes, we’ll be playing dodgeball and giving away free shoes. But as awesome as that is, even if you HATE Dodgeball and DESPISE free shoes, you should come to this because

a) it’s the last McCarren Pool Party EVER

b) it’s going to fun, regardless of its “last ever one of these so I gotta go one last time before it’s over and I can’t go anymore” status.

Doors/Dodgeball at 2:00 PM

School’s Out for Summer

by Shirtless Tom

shirtless-tom-3.jpg

Even the rain was too scared to play dodgeball this week.
With the return of some of the best regulars this week, the rain held off, despite threats.
This Sunday was once again a memorable one. Three- time MVP this year, Brandon (Care Bear), was in a motorcycle accident and couldn’t play, but he did lend a hand as one of the best refs we have ever had. Big thanks to him and all the other refs.
A sight for sore eyes, the ‘wizards on vacation’ returned from St. Bart’s. They were the jerks in Hawaiian shirts and jean cut offs who dominated the court.
Dodgeball at McCarren Park Pool have even caught the eye of GOOD Magazine who will be shooting Sunday August 17. Everyone wear your best threads, you know I’ll be in my Sunday best as always.
See you next Sunday.

MGMT Made all These People Wish They Weren’t Too Old To Do Acid…

by Shirtless Tom

mgmt_crowd.jpg

This week has been dodgeball crazy.
Sunday was epic.
The line to get into the pool started forming at 11 o’clock.
Yeah, crazy, three hours before the gates open, that is how good the line up was this week.
MGMT and The Ting Tings killed it.
The pool reached maximum capacity around 5:00 despite the rain, which was a much needed cooling agent for us dodgeballers.
In addition to that, Brooklyn’s own took home the championship at the Battle for Brooklyn Tournament the day after, on Monday. So many funny aspects to that, Brooklyn took over and won a Manhattan tourney. Even though many of our all-stars including Jackie & Little Liz (care bear), Shawn & Dre (care bear), Eric and yours truly Shirtless Tom (BKKB) were all sore from the pool the day before.
Thank you to all who helped ref, most of all Ben “Bubbles” Hanyes.

Good Magazine Block Party - Saucony Originals Pong (a) Hit!

Good Magazine Block Party - Pong Hits!

Clad in dangerously short shorts and sexily customized Saucony Originals T-shirts, my little helper and I walked through the doors of 111 Minna with one mission: To bring the joys of PONG to the people of San Francisco! And bring it we did.

Good Magazine Block Party - Short Shorts, Long Hair

Although the event itself started off with only a slow trickle of block party-goers, it took no time at all for those first few people to gravitate toward our dimly lit tennis table and take a few pong hits.

Who Won?

Ping Pong enthusiasts of all walks and aptitudes partook, making the games, by turns, airy and fierce, blithe and competitive. As things heated up and more people crowded around the competitors in gawking awe, it became clear that the main attraction of the evening–second, of course, to the free drinks–was our table.

More Ping Pong!

A couple hours into the event, the sun, in a show of grace, decided to peep its head out from behind the San Francisco summer fog and, fueled now by warmth and sunlight, the party people began reaching in droves for the Saucony Originals squirt guns, and it wasn’t long before the entire block was a cross-fire barrage of well aimed streams of water, making the mere act of walking outside an invitation to get soaked. And we’re talking everyone– from little kids to the well-built security guys to the smartly coiffed band members– was partaking in the fun.

Squirt Gun Violence

But back to the PONG: The promise of victory (and free shoes) kept even the most disheartened losers coming back for another round, and with DJ Franki Chan providing the joyously dance-able background music, our waiting list grew from a small handful of names to an entire dry-erase board tightly packed with dozens and dozens of eager players, all of whom, even as we were literally running out of space to sign-up, wanted their chance at PONG GLORY.

Let’s Get it Pong!

The competitors themselves became a show in their own right: there were lots of fist pumps, lots of delightful squealing, lots of guffawing and shit-talking and mom insults and gasps and triumphant yelping. Even Irene from the Real World Seattle decided to make an appearance, actually winning two games and signing up for a pair of free kicks! As the night neared its end, the hours of free drinks began catching up with everyone, and the games became much less a competition and more a structured way to ensure that one’s motor skills were still sharp enough for the trek home.

As you all know it has been a HOT summer at the pool this year. There is one guy, though, who knows how to keep things cool. Whether he is on the court playing or keeping all the players in check this guy has figured out all the good ways to keep the heat out.

We wanted to pay tribute to this skill picked up over years at McCarren. Check out some of the pics below so that you may begin your quest to be as cool as Shirtless Tom.
