Shuffleboard’s Rich and Slightly Interesting History

Shuffleboard actually started out as a game called “shove board” in the pubs of 15th C England. The object was trying to get a coin as close to the edge of a tabletop as possible, kind of like flick football!

The game went through tons of changes to its name and rules - as you might expect for a game that is, like, six centuries old - and was at one point banned by Henry VII. Seriously, that guy was out of control!

Shuffleboard made it across the pond and was ruled a game of skill rather than chance in 1848 by a Pennsylvania courtroom. Obviously Prohibition put a damper on the game as bars were still the main provider of the game. However World War II brought back popularity to the game and it spread like wildfire throughout our country.

The outdoor shuffleboard game was popularized in - you guessed it- Florida! At a resort in Daytona Beach around 1913 to be specific. This began the cruise, resort & retirement community popularity of the game which is how many people are familiar with the game.

We at Team Saucony that think this game is fun & competitive without making us exert too much energy - which is exactly how we like our games. People younger than 65 are starting to realize this game is pretty rad & we want you to experience this really, really, really old game with us too! Come to the Texas Garage in Austin from March 13-16 to get some free toys & try to score some free Saucony’s by playing Shuffleboard with us!
